News from our
Partner country - Bangladesh

More than 150 people have been reported dead and 1,131
missing after Cyclone Aila hit Bangladesh and the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on the 28th May. Over 500,000 houses were damaged. 600,000 people sought refuge in the multi-purpose
cyclone shelters, some of which were constructed in recent years by Christian Aid with Commitment for Life funding.

Coastal areas were flooded and uprooted trees caused chaos in Calcutta. Heavy rains damaged crops and caused floods and landslides in many areas. Many river banks and mud houses in Bangladesh have been completely destroyed. The worry is that salt water from a tidal surge that followed the cyclone will
contaminate freshwater sources which are crucial to farming.

Aid agencies are working together in the affected areas. Some of Christian Aid’s Sidr Project areas are moderately affected. Meanwhile, wildlife experts are concerned about the fate of nearly 500 tigers living in reserves in the area.
