What do Rainbows do?
Rainbows have fun! They take part in games and activities as part of their programme called the Rainbow Jigsaw. Everything a Rainbow does helps her to develop and think for herself, in a safe girl-only environment.
St Paul's Rainbows meet on Thursday evenings during term time, between 5.45 and 6.45pm. This, the youngest section of Girlguiding, is open to all girls between 5 and 7 years. If you would like more information or wish to add a name to our waiting list then please click here to email the Rainbow Guider.
Further information can be found at Girlguiding UK on their website www.girlguiding.org.uk
What have we been doing?
“What a busy term you’ve had” remarked one of the Rainbow’s mum’s. She wasn’t wrong! I don’t know how we managed to do so much in the time. We’ve had wonderful visits to Betty’s and Ripley Farm, the first giving us the opportunity to sample a bit of gracious living and learn about how Betty’s operates, the second letting the Rainbows run a little wild and hold day old chicks, feed lambs and sit on a shire horse. Crafts have featured again with the girls enjoying a Hama Beads evening and making truffles to go in hand decorated gift boxes ready for Father’s Day. Georgina Cooper (Orchid) treated us to an evening of aromatherapy, where the girls learnt how to give a hand and arm massage and learnt about the effects of the
various oils.
We kept our Guiding Promise to help others by raising £190 for Rainbows 4 Children. The Rainbows held a sponsored silence for five minutes (which everyone managed!) and spent the whole evening playing
silent games such as Sleeping Lions and Chinese Whispers. The money will fund the education of two African children for a year and also provide extra items for the school building. We ran a Cake Stall at the Church Coffee Shop on Saturday 18 July. This was organised in support of the fundraising to replace the building a Birk Crag, County Guide Headquarters. The event raised over £240, and we are grateful for the Church’s support with this project. A big thank you also for the support we have had with the Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. We have placed our order and look forward to lots of exciting new equipment in the autumn.
Our end of term party was a very special event this year. We were entertained by “Upbeat for Music” who taught us some African drumming. We wore our traditional African celebration hats (Kalis), which we had made the week before and enjoyed a more British type of party tea. The night also marked the end of an era, as Ann Drummond stepped down as a Guider with St. Paul’s Rainbows. Ann has been involved with the Rainbows for more than fifteen years and will be missed by us all We hope that she is still going to pop in and see us regularly. The Brownies came to join the party and she was presented with gifts including a helium balloon which I gather is still
wandering around her flat!
Have you got what it takes to step into Ann’s shoes? In the New Year, Rainbows will be looking for a new adult helper. Each week we have a lot of fun, meet new people and learn new things. The “grown ups” have also been known to enjoy an evening out on their own from time to time. If you would like to volunteer or learn a bit more about what is involved, then please give me a call on 01423 888423.
